Word of the French's "Declaration of the rights of man" had gotten to the island and gave the slaves hope, however their owners continued to harass and work them. Still, the slaves now believed a revolution of their own was possible and it could work.

Social instability |
Things were becoming chaotic in Haiti, all social classes growing volatile. The Petit blancs believed they too were being discriminated against and wanted interest rates lowered, and when the people of colour gained more rights (as long as they owned land and was not the child of a slave) fighting broke out between them and the enraged Petit blancs. The plantation owners were angry because the conditions for their slaves were improving. It was then the slaves decided to revolt, for after everything they were still given no rights and remained the property of the public.
